Getting to Patmos by Flying to a Nearby Island and Catching a Boat Connection

Flying to a nearby island and continuing to Patmos by boat is a popular choice for many travelers. The flight from Athens to nearby islands typically lasts about 45 minutes. The connecting ferry or boat ride from the island to Patmos ranges between 1-3 hours depending on the island and route.

We suggest the following travel options, based on comfort, reliability, and the variety of transfer possibilities:

Option 1 (Recommended): Fly to Kos, then take a boat to Patmos

  • Advantages:
    • Kos offers multiple scheduled boat connections to Patmos daily.
    • Transit options are more frequent and generally less affected by windy weather conditions.
    • Flight availability to Kos is easy to obtain, both via domestic carriers and international charter flights.
  • Disadvantages:
    • The boat ride from Kos to Patmos may take approximately 3-5 hours, depending on the specific route.

Tip: To ensure a same-day connection, we recommend scheduling your arrival in Kos in the morning.

Option 2: Fly to Leros or Kalymnos, then take a boat to Patmos

  • Advantages:
    • The boat trip from these islands to Patmos is shorter-usually between 1 and 2.5 hours.
    • These islands are closer to Patmos, making them convenient jumping-off points.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Limited flight availability due to small aircraft (typically 17-seaters).
    • It may be harder to find flights, especially during peak season.

Tip: Arriving in the morning improves your chances of connecting to Patmos the same day.

Option 3: Fly to Samos, then take a ferry to Patmos

  • Advantages:
    • Samos has two departure ports (Karlovasi and Vathi), offering more flexibility in coordinating ferry schedules with your flight arrival.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Only ferry options are available (no hydrofoils), so the transfer duration is typically around 2.5 hours.

Please note: Ferry and boat schedules between islands may not be released until close to the travel date. We strongly encourage guests to contact us directly for assistance with planning their inter-island transfers.
